The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Ottawa was established in 1993 as an official representative body of the Slovene Government in Canada. The embassy provides consular assistance and promotes bilateral political, economic, and cultural relations.

Is is estimated that around 40,000 Canadian citizens have origins in Slovenia due to the massive emigration after World War II. Canada is also one of the overseas countries with the largest Slovene diaspora.

The embassy is also responsible for the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

    Cultural cooperation

Since 1993 the two states have collaborated on a bilateral and multilateral basis, also in regards to cultural cooperation.

    Film and visual arts

The embassy supports individual events in Canada as well as in the European Union. In 2013 at the 28th European Union Film Festival in Ottawa and in Toronto, the films A Trip by Nejc Gazvoda ( produced by Perfo Production), Night Boats co-produced by Bela Film, and A Night Too Young by Olmo Omerzu were screened and supported by the embassy. In 2014 the film Boles was screened at the EU Film Festival.

    Literature

In 2013, in honour of Boris Pahor's 100th birthday, a series of literary evenings with film screenings were organised at several venues: Ottawa Public Library, Toronto North York Central Library, and Vancouver Public Library. On this occasion an excerpt of Pahor's Necropolis was available in English as a downloadable e-book for readers in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

    Music

The embassy supported music concerts of Barbara Jernejčič Fürst and Žarko Ignjatović during their tour at various venues in Breslau, Etobicoke, Hamilton, and Ottawa. In 2014 the duo Irena Preda and pianist Nejc Lavrenčič played at the School of Music at the University of Ottawa.
