Launched in 1993, Matkurja.com – a guide to virtual Slovenia was the first Slovene web directory and used to be the Slovenia's most popular search engine (today rated 60th), with small bits of information in English. Mat'kurja means "the hen's mother" – a comment on the geographical shape of Slovenia, which is also visible in the memorable illustration by Tomaž Lavrič.

Matkurja.com comprises catalogues of information, including Slovenia's history, geography, government, economy, culture, language, food and drink, with a searchable directory of Slovenian web.

Background

Mat'Kurja portal was developed at the Jožef Stefan Institute and launched on 23 November 1993. Its creators to be mentioned are Boris Čibej, Mišo Alkalaj and Tomaž Lavrič, as well as the developers Mark Martinec, Mateja Celcer, Joh Dokler and Žiga Kranjec. The initial name SloWWWenia was changed to Mat'kurja in March 1997.

From 1994 to 1997 the portal's development was supported by public funds (Government Communication Office). Today Mat'Kurja is a public domain database, the project leader being UPC Telemach, Slovenia's leading broadband operator.
